Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontics
Have questions about orthodontic care? You’re not alone. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from patients and parents.
Getting Started with Orthodontic Care
1. Is it required that my family dentist schedule my appointment?
Nope! While many of our patients are referred by their family dentist, it’s completely fine to schedule an appointment directly. Just give us a call or request a consultation online—we’re happy to help either way!
2. At what age should I schedule an orthodontic screening for my child?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an evaluation by age 7. By this time, most kids have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, making it easier for us to spot any early issues.
3. How do I schedule an initial appointment?
Scheduling is easy! You can call our office, email us, or submit a request through our website. Our friendly front desk team will ask a few basic questions and get you set up.
4. What should I expect at the first visit?
When you arrive, we’ll collect your new patient forms and insurance card. Then, the doctor will perform a detailed exam, and we may take X-rays or photos to better understand your smile.
5. What will I learn during the initial consultation?
During your visit, we’ll go over:
Whether orthodontic treatment is needed
What treatment options are best
If any teeth need to be removed
How long will the treatment may take
The cost and available financing options
Treatment Details
6. Will my teeth straighten out on their own as I grow?
Unfortunately, no. In fact, spacing for the front teeth often gets tighter with age. Without treatment, misaligned teeth typically don’t correct themselves.
7. Will I need teeth removed for braces?
Not always. While extractions can help in some cases, advances in orthodontics have made it possible to treat many patients without removing teeth.
8. How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Treatment times vary, but most people wear braces for 18–24 months. Some cases may take as little as 8 months or as long as 30 months, depending on complexity.
9. How much do braces cost? Do you offer financing?
We’ll provide a detailed cost estimate at your consultation. We offer flexible financing options to fit your budget and will help you understand and maximize your insurance benefits.
10. Do you use recycled braces?
Absolutely not! Every patient receives brand-new braces to ensure the highest standards of hygiene and care.
11. Do you give shots for orthodontic treatment?
No shots are needed! Orthodontic care is generally non-invasive and doesn’t require anesthesia.
Scheduling & Appointments
12. How often will I need to come in?
Most patients visit us every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on their specific needs. We’ll work with your schedule to make it as convenient as possible.
13. Can all appointments be scheduled after school?
We try our best, but after-school slots are limited. Fortunately, appointments are spaced out enough that school disruptions are usually minimal.
14. Can I drop off my child for their appointment?
Yes! We understand busy schedules. Just make sure to check in with your child’s treatment manager—sometimes we may need to speak with a parent afterward.
15. Can I return to school the day I get braces?
Yes, you can head right back to school! Some minor soreness may occur later, but it won’t stop your day.
Life with Braces
16. Do braces hurt?
Braces usually don’t hurt. You may feel some soreness for a few days after adjustments, but over-the-counter pain relievers like Advil or Tylenol can help. Most of the time, there’s no discomfort at all!
17. Can I still play sports?
Absolutely! We recommend wearing a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces during any contact sport.
18. Are there foods I need to avoid?
Yes, we’ll give you a full list when treatment begins. In general, avoid sticky, hard, or crunchy foods like caramel, ice, and raw veggies that could damage your braces.
19. How often should I brush my teeth with braces?
At least four times a day—after every meal and before bed. We’ll also show you how to floss with braces and may recommend a special fluoride toothpaste.
20. What is considered an emergency appointment?
If something breaks or you’re in severe discomfort, give us a call. Often, we can help over the phone. If needed, we’ll get you in for a quick fix.
21. Do I still need to see my regular dentist during orthodontic treatment?
Yes! Continue your regular dental checkups. Your dentist will let you know how often to come in for cleanings while you’re in braces.
Early Treatment for Kids
22. Can orthodontic care begin before all permanent teeth come in?
Yes. In some cases, early treatment helps guide jaw growth and prevent more serious problems later on.
23. What is Phase One treatment?
Phase One (or early) treatment typically begins between ages 7–10 and lasts 6–18 months. It’s designed to address specific concerns early and improve your child’s self-confidence.
24. Will my child still need full braces after Phase One?
Most likely, yes. After Phase One, we enter a “resting period” to monitor growth and development. We’ll keep you updated on when full treatment may be needed.
25. Will my child need an expander?
We’ll determine that during your child’s initial consultation. Not every child needs one, but if it’s beneficial, we’ll walk you through how it works.
Adult Orthodontics
26. Is it too late to get braces as an adult?
Not at all! About 1 in 4 orthodontic patients today are adults. Braces can boost your confidence and support long-term dental health, no matter your age.
27. Can I get braces if I have crowns or missing teeth?
Yes. Braces can still work effectively even if you have crowns or gaps. We’ll tailor a treatment plan that takes all your dental work into account.
28. Why should I choose an orthodontic specialist?
Orthodontists receive extra years of training beyond dental school, allowing them to focus exclusively on aligning teeth and correcting bite issues. That expertise ensures a safer, more effective outcome for your smile.
