Orthodontist Emergency Care
While orthodontic treatment is generally smooth and problem-free, occasional issues can arise. Whether it’s a minor irritation or something more urgent, we’re here to help. Orthodontic emergencies typically fall into two categories: issues related to appliances and direct injuries to the mouth or teeth.
Issues with Orthodontic Appliances
Sometimes braces or appliances can become loose or damaged. If you experience a problem such as a loose bracket, poking wire, or bent appliance, please call our office during regular patient hours so we can schedule an appointment. We are unable to accommodate walk-ins, but here are some quick tips you can try until we can see you:
Irritating wire? Cover it with orthodontic wax or gently tuck it under the archwire using a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
Loose bracket or band? It’s usually safe to leave it in place until your visit. Please call our office to schedule a time for repair.
Poking or broken wire? Use a pencil eraser to bend it in or carefully clip it with clean nail clippers. If discomfort persists, contact us for further guidance.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth
In the case of a direct injury, such as a fall, sports impact, or accident, apply ice to the area and contact your general dentist immediately. X-rays are often needed to assess the extent of the damage.
If a tooth has been knocked loose, fractured, or displaced, your family dentist should be your first call, as they have the necessary tools and anesthesia required for these types of injuries. Once the area is stabilized, we will determine if your orthodontic appliances require repair or adjustment.
After-Hours Assistance
If an urgent issue arises outside of office hours and the patient is in pain, please call our office. You’ll be directed to after-hours care instructions or a team member who can help guide you through your next steps.
